OK, here's the deal; horn guys are cool to have in a band because, they most of the time have finished their degrees in music so they can write great charts and don't mind transposing, they have played completely different gigs than most of us( our trombone player is telling me stories last night of playing chess with Ray Charles and when Ray thinks you are cheating he turns out the lights and says OK now I gotcha!.........) they will help schlep your gear because they feel guilty for only carrying their horn and music stand to the gig. Plus the horn guys are kinda fraternal as they do have to play as one with each other correctly compared to the rest of us who basically "fly" alone. As far as putting a band of this size together for profit you have to be that good as far as making your asking price worth the dough. We play 2-4 times a month and most of us have other bands and shuffle schedules and so forth. We have been lucky in 1 year to find our niche with the local market and haven't had a problem getting the money to pay everyone accordingly. You get more so you pay more.....! I come from the 4-5 piece "school of rock" mentality so this is a real luxury! I am sure Eric can give his take on horn guys!

Yes, Norm and Eric's MP3s do provide some GREAT listening. In part
because I listen from a keyboard perspective, and both you guys sound
great and demonstrate accomplished playing. Thumbs up. And beyond
that, horn sections rule. I've always pictured it to be a bigger can
of worms to put it all together, though you can separate the horn
section and "rest of band" sections for separate rehearsals, then put
the whole band together. Definitely worth the effort as the results
speak for themselves. And Norm, you have a large section that must be
really fun to work with! I would guess that the fee pie gets sliced
up with a large band, but you distinguish yourselves from giant sea of
common bands. Man I love the funk/fusion horn bands of the late 60s
through mid 70s! Congratulations both of you!
