Subject:Re: B4 software
Hi,
I use B4 with a midi keyboard but am open to your thoughts about
this.............
I had to buy a new midi keyboard anyway so I chose one that was 'fully
assignable'. The EDIROL PCR 50 as it happens. I chose this over some of
the cheaper (better value ?) keyboards such as Evolution because in my
opinion it had a much better keyboard 'feel' (personal taste issue here).
The point that I would like some opinions on, is that this set up does not
need any 'midi-mapper' software/firmware/hardware because I can set up the
PCR-50 to send the correct codes to drive B4 without any "re-mapping". I
did this because I had to buy a new keyboard anyway, but do you think that
this scenario is likely to yield lower overall latencies ?
I run an old Yamaha sound card and the fastest I can get at the moment is
15mS (which is OK by me as I also play real pipe organs so 15mS is lightning
!). I have always thought that B4 needs a bit of reverb but when using
Audiomulch to provide reverb on B4 the latency goes up to about 35 mS which
is actually too slow.
Does a PC based 'midi-remapper' increase latency like some other programs
(eg Audiomulch adding reverb) ?
By the way, B4 seems to me to be one of the easiest to use and rock-solid
pieces of software I have ever used. (When going to band practise I
frequently boot the PC without screen, keyboard or mouse (!), Windows 2000
and B4 come up nicely and off we go...... I like to tell the other guys
in the band that this little wait (Windows starting) is the Leslie motors
and tubes warming up !!!! )
P.S. I'm still looking for a way to add reverb to B4 without increasing the
latency......(I have to grin a little to myself each time I look longingly
at the old spring reverb unit sitting on a shelf in the garage ! ! Get
thee behind me, you spring reverb !)
P.P.S Many thanks to Bill Bilhou for his supportive words. Good luck with
the new job on Monday !
Cheers,
Claire
