The Ycord situation is something I"ve used a lot. In
my larger rigs, I use a Roland M120 line mixer which
has balanced 1/4" out for monitors (which goes to my
map) and balanced XLR for the house. When there has
been a shortage of channels, I have used an XLR
balanced Y cable with no problems...for years
actually. That was much simpler than readjusting the
pans on 12 channels (which would have messed up my
stereo image on stage.

I've also used the same ycable on 2 direct boxes for
the same reason on my smaller on-stage rig. But if
you have a simple 4 or 6 channel mixer, repanning is a
lot simpler.
