Subject:Re: Submixers stereo-mono

I've found that mixing L/R outputs to mono can give rise to phasing problems, particularly where stereo samples are involved. Even in modern 'modelled' organs if you are using the internal Leslie sim you can find you loose much from the Leslie effect. Also - even though most stereo keyboards have a mono output facility it is often actually a 'summed' output. I usually play in the bands PA in stereo with my on-stage submix also in stereo, I find that if I am forced (kicking and screaming!) to play in mono then I am better off taking the other output (not labelled mono) from the back of the keyboard and treating it as a mono signal in the mixer board, this way I still get an acceptable Leslie sim and no phasing problems from any other samples I'm using from my keyboards live.

Subject: [CWSG] Submixers stereo-mono

Some time ago I called Mackie tech support to get some good advice
about the best way to use a stereo mixer (as a submixer) to hook up
to an unfamiliar house PA where my stereo keyboard setup might only
get one input and maybe not have enough output to be heard well
(which I had run into before but had the mixer with me and 2 channels
open at the PA).

The Mackie tech guy told me the best way to go from stereo to mono
with a mixer was to center all the 'pan' or 'balance' L/R controls at
12 o'clock, then use a simple 'Y' adapter to go from stereo to mono
output at the L/R mains or Tape Outs. So using an inexpensive stereo
mini-mixer like the current online bargains, this would be the way
for instance to plug into a single powered speaker, a mono PA, or
even a good bass amp which works well with keyboards. The main point
was, don't 'pan,' it won't sound as good as the 'summed' signal
output. From Mackie to me to you ````` ~ o--^o
