Subject:Nord Electro Crashes on First Date
Well guys , I took the advice of the majority of this list and ordered a Nord
Electro. It's been a love hate relationship after 24 hours but the most
hateful thing is that it "crashed" within that 24 hour period.
Of course now I'm really
frustrated.....
OK so now for what I
like about the thing. I think for the most part the organ section sounded
very real through my modified leslie 900. I think the chorus vibrato is close
enough for jazz - which is what I needed. It had a very nice feel and it was
sounding like the kind of organ that could conceivably fool you in an A/B test
with a good player and a good leslie. I did think the overdrive came on too
strong too soon ( also like me on a first date). I loved the wurli and rhodes
sounds - all the sounds are great . But there are two things I absolutely
hated.
The first thing is the split point business on the 61. Since I really only
need organ I assumed that the 61 would suffice. Wrong. As some of you know you
get an even split of 2 and a half octaves of upper and lower manuals on the 61
for organ. I didn't know ... but I know now . It can' t be changed .How dumb
is this ? You can't really play bass and an upper manual split on this
configuration. What in the hell were they thinking? Probably that you would have
to order a 73 now instead.
And the low overall output volume
also drives me bananas. Of course I assume that many of you can afford an
additional $400.00 to $800.00 speakeasy with a "barker" to remedy this. The
output of the Electro is considerably weaker than my VK7. What kind of power do
these people assume we are running ?
And then
now this crash business. No button I push will remedy this. Notes are dropping
out and everything is screwed up. Thank God it happened while I can still get
my money back.
I am going to be taking a very serious look at a
Roland VK8 instead. This crash buisness really scares me. My VK7 never ever had
a problem. Of course I have issues with the VK8 too - no edit screen being the
biggest drawback. I like the sound of the VK8 - I think it has the best
chorus vibrato out there.
Enough for now....pardon me while I go scream
Mark
