Subject:Re: Jon Lord sound with a CX-3
Guitar amps would be ideal for this purpose. And
actually, the old CX3 is a great choice for this
application.
Back in the day (when I was teaching myself to play
bass by playing with some friends who were GREAT heavy
rock players doing Deep Purple/Free/Humble Pie) a
keyboardist in that band used an old CX3, an Electro
Harmonix Big Muff, and a Roland JC120. I think if you
find a nice tube amp, you can get away without the Big
Muff, but the advantage is the JC120 will help smooth
out things and give you a pseudo-leslie vibe
(generating motion via the chorus).
If you go that route (JC120), I recommend getting a
Fulltone BassDrive ($185.00 new). I've used that on
my Electro with very satisfying results for heavy Deep
Purple sounds. The CX3 will be that much ballsier with
it. If you're on a budget, you can probably find a
Boss DS1 (orange distortion pedal) for less than $40.
Better yet, find yourself a small JCM800 combo (Lord
was using that on the "Machine Head" DVD with his
Hammond and it sounded killer!). You can find those
for around $500 or less used.
