Subject:Re: Roland VR-760 questions
I had thought that there was no difference between the VR760 and the V-Combo but reading Pauls reply it could be that there is as there some of Pauls understanding of the VR760 is not the same as mine.
1) Maybe just the name is different
2) I agree, the expression pedal is only switchable for the piano.
3) I agree it is not designed as a MIDI controller but the keyboard is in split mode you can have any of the three main sections on either side of the split but can not have the same section on either side of the split e.g. synth/piano or organ/piano or piano/synth or synth/organ etc but not synth/synth or piano/piano or organ/organ. This was an issue for me as I wanted to split the organ sound into organ bass for left hand and other organ settings for the right hand, in the end the only way to do this was to buy an SRX07 card (much recommended). The hold (damper) pedal can be switched on or off within the global settings. I have switched on the hold pedal for the synth section as I use some piano sounds from the SRX07 card which when installed becomes part of the synth section.
4) Every patch (registration) can independently have an octave setting and fine tuning as part of the patch but transposing can only be done from the global settings pages and applies to the whole keyboard as long as the transpose function is switched on.
5) The SRX07 brings so much more to this keyboard that to spend this amount of money on the thing and not get the SRX07 card is just daft. There are, as Paul says, 475 sounds that you can use as soon as it is plugged in and every one of can be edited and saved. With that number of new sounds you can't expect every one of them to be wonderful but a significant proportion are wonderful and you should buy this card if you get the VR760/VCombo.
I got the VR760 as an all in one keyboard to cut down the amount of gear I take to gigs and sometimes, at a push, I will do that but I have found that I have started taking my Trinity to gigs as well because the synth section on the VR760 doesn't get some of those whooshy seventies sounds that my acid jazz band need. I absolutely love the organ and piano for live work but you do have to tweak a lot to get them sounding right. In the end it depends what you need out of the synth section, basic pads, strings and lead sounds it can get away with, anything more you need to get a synth but you won't find a synth with drawbars and that's the whole point.
Take a good look at the Roland US site and check out the interactive multimedia pages for the SRX series of cards, if there is something particular you want from the synth section maybe one of the other cards will fill your needs. I also have the SRX09 world sounds installed mainly to get some piano accordion and banjo sounds to use in another band I play that is kind of country/bluegrass.

Subject: Re: [CWSG] Roland VR-760 questions
I have had the V-Combo for 6 months now so I think I can answer your
questions.
1) I have the V-Combo name on mine and the only change is the name.
Roland wanted to continue the V line with the V Synth etc.
2)This is where the keyboard falls short. The expression pedal is always
active for the organ and the synth, and switchable only for the piano.
3)This is not a midi controller!! It can split L&R but that's it. Left
hand bass splits are possible but you have to give up the synth section.
The hold pedal is global, sorry.
4)Octave and transpose is very flexible in all areas.
5)The Ultimate Keys card is a must have with this board. You get 475 new
patches ready to go. If you are like me, you can tweak them a little
bit,(filter, res, attack, release, effects)then save them to a registration
I find the V-Combo to be an acquired taste. It's not for everyone. If
you want a synth that will cover all basses and you can tweak every
little thing, Buy the new fantom. The V-Combo gives you great B3 and
Piano but the synth is bearly passable.
