The horn thing is a real point of contention. In my old band I would be needed to cover horn parts, and the best results (which actually garnered quite a few "how did you get THOSE brass sounds?) were acquired using a few modules as opposed to one. I'd layer my Korg 03r, my M3r, Roland JV1080 (had a "performance" set up with trumpet -dry-, brass section and very wet trumpet sounds) and that would work really well. The key is to use a few different sounds together emulating the different players' tones and embouchures, and slightly varying their attack/decay times. But one synth by itself wont do it.

Obviously, NOT a replacement for real horns.

I think a lot of players have come that around that circle - I know I sure
have. Most of us had our 5-minute fling with synth horn parts back in the 80's &
have since moved on. I'd rather play a hammond sound to try & fill in the
band sound than use synth brass any day. Some times it sounds ok to try &
reproduce the brass line, but often it sounds better to just come up with a part that
fills in everything. The fact that you're playing a keyboard sound in a
keyboard manner makes the whole thing sound not only more natural, but just a lot
better overall for the band. I've actually lost a job here or there for
preferring that over trying to ape the horn lines from the record, but to each thier
own.
