Anything *is* possible, but the 12ax7 is the factory spec tube. I've heard
of people trying 12auXX and they claim is it makes a difference. I say -
whatever.

The *best* thing that happened to MY Roto, was when tube replacement time
rolled around - I replaced it with a GT and have never been happier. Let me
also say - I think H&K ships their boxes with crappy chinese junk - so
simply by virture of a substitution, it made it sound better. The distortion
was a lot smoother and had more range...the actual sound itself wasn't
really 'warmer' - just more latitude in the range of sounds it could
produce. Still is a noisy box for recording purposes.
