I would steer clear of the "joystick" MIDI adapters for the CX-3 upgrade. The joystick MIDI interface is a very old design based on the original Sound Blaster hardware, and Microsoft only barely supports it anymore. I've found the joystick interface drivers to be a bit flaky under newer OS versions like Win2K. Stick to USB interfaces with dedicated from-the-manufacturer drivers; I would even stay away from USB all-in-one sound/MIDI devices, if you want to be really safe.
Plus, a laptop computer probably doesn't even have a joystick port to plug the 15-pin connector in ...
