Subject:Re: The origin of "CloneWheel"
All,
I have no illusions of inventing the term "CloneWheel" (or the diminutive, "clonewheel"). I did coin the term "CloneWheel Support Group," which was a reasonably logical follow-on to the "Voce Support Group," a term that I also coined. The CWSG was much less of a mouthful than the alternative, the HSVKRCEOVWNISG (Hammond-Suzuki-Voce-Korg-Roland-Clavia-Emu-Oberheim-Viscount-Wersi-Native-Instruments Support Group). ;^)
If my memory serves me, I heard the term "clonewheel" first used on the VSG or one of the other Hammond-based lists a few months before we morphed into the current entity, which adds some credence to Dan Hocter's claim. I guess we all owe you a nod, Dan.
I didn't apply the service mark (sm) the CWSG to lay claim to the clonewheel term -- although, in retrospect, I guess I can see why it might appear so to some. I did it so that one of the clone manufacturers -- or worse, Keyboard Mag -- couldn't steal it away to name a similar support service. I've never used the term for monetary gain, and don't plan to do so in the future.
Regards,
-BW
