Ah, Eric... you are too kind! =)
I believe the riff you're referring to is the Gm chord one, right?
If you listen closely it sounds just like he's repeating his right
hand with his left, and that's exactly how you do it - with two
hands. It's actually pretty simple and there are 2 methods I use
depending on if I'm playing one or two manuals:
one manual: start with your right thumb on G near the bottom of the
key and your left thumb just above it on the same key. Start slowly
playing right thumb, left thumb, right thumb, left, right, etc..
until you can build it up to a nice speed (the song gets very fast,
remember?) Then, try incorparating the chords. They are all 16th
notes:
|G G G G C+E G Bb+D G G G G G Bb+D G G G| first measure
|G G G G C+E G Bb+D G G G D D F F F# F# | second measure
the d f f# g walkup is the hardest part to play fast with two thumbs
on the same key so gauge your speed by how fast you can play the
walkup. It takes a little while, but once you get the hang of it you
can really rip fast!
two manuals aka the "right" way aka "the way Medeski probably does
it": same as one manual except, you guessed it, you don't have to
play the same key with both hands!!! Just set the drawbars/perc/c/v
to the same settings (so it sounds like you're hitting the same
notes) and let 'er rip!
***note*** this is one of my favorite songs to play and it's very
fun but please let your drummer hear the song a few times first or
they'll ruin the whole thing! =) The most important thing about
playing this song is that the entire band must be able to follow the
drummer and the drummer must be able to gradually speed up the song
so subtly that the audience doesn't really notice until you start
getting really fast.. if he speeds up to slowly... well, people will
definitely leave to either get a drink, or hit the restrooms.. so,
keep the people on the dance floor and keep it funky!!!
hope this helps,
Sean
