Subject:Re: V5 and Oberheim OB3-2
I'm intrigued by your question and wondered whether you could explain
in a little more detail how you have set up the two units, and also a
little bit more about the OB3^2.
First off, is the OB a keyboard or a module?
Second, what are you feeding the audio outs of both units into?
Third, are you using the in-built Leslie sim on the OB?
Fourth, as the V5 doesn't have an in-built sim, what are you using
for the rotary unit?
Lastly, how have you set up the midi connection so that OB midi out
is connected to V5 midi in and checked that the V5 is receiving on
the same midi channel that the OB is transmitting on?
You say that you can get the V5 to play through the OB, but the OB
doesn't have audio inputs, so the V5 can't actually play "through
the OB"
Reading between the lines, are you midi'd up correctly and so
expecting the the OB's sounds will somehow relay via midi cable thru
to the V5's audio?
This definitely won't happen any time soon. Both units' audio outs
have to be fed to a mixer and then on to a Leslie sim or Leslie.
If you get the above sorted out you then have to decide what to do
about the drawbars on both unit. Would you want them to work so that
the OB's draws work the drawbars' sound on the V5 so that they work
in sync.
Unless it happens that the OB and V5 share indentical drawbar midi
control numbers, then you have to put a little gizmo into the midi
line from OB to V5, or if you prefer to use the V5 to control the OB,
then the gizmo is put in the midi link between V5 midi out to OB's
midi in.
BTW the gizmo is a Midi Solutions Midi Mapper as found on
www.ashbysolutions.com ( the web-site of founder member Bruce Wahler,
not Bruce Whaler, as some-one spellt it recently which I though a bit
fishy )
It may be possible to combine the two units with a good effect so it
is in theory a good idea.
The OB has some advantages over the V5, as it features reverb and
strong percussion.
I have a Viscount DB3 module ( whose sounds I'm not at present
using ) which I have midi'd to an Electro and at the same time to a
Hammond XM1 module. Using a Midi mapper, the DB draws work the draws
on the Electro which only has electronic drawbuttons, . I've set up
identical patches on both the Hammond and Electro and used the built
in sim of the Electro and run the Hammond's straight sound into a
Dynacord DLS300 Leslie sim then mixed the two sounds, and also got
the ramp'up/down on both "Leslie" units to work in sync, so what you
want to do can be done and it was worth the hassle in my case as it
sounds great.
The main thing to remember is that midi just sends control
information, like volume, which key is played, sustain etc., whereas
the actual sound comes out of the audio outs.
So it wasn't a stupid question as what you're trying to do is a bit
complicated, but is definitely not rocket science.
Regards, Thomas.
