Subject:CX-3 vs VK-7 vs B-3

Prior to owning my CX-3's, I had a VK-7. The benchmark was (and is?)
my B-3, 2 Leslie 122's, and M-100. Blues Revue Magazine reviewed my
2nd CD in December of 2003 and stated that the Hammond on this album
was "miked much better than the B-3 on Seth's previous album". I used
a VK-7 on all but 2 songs on the first (others were a B-3 and M-100)
and used a CX-3 (v-1) and B-3 on the second. If they only knew. I
think default mike postions on the CX-3 right out of the box (either
version) have surpassed the VK-7 and sound better than many attempts
at miking the real thing. Jimmy Pugh has stated that he likes to use a
Shure SM-58 about 6 inches away from the horn and another one 8 - 10"
away from the rotor of a typical 122 to get his sweet sound. Factor
that into the way the CX-3's are "miked" at the factory and you have
some super colors right out of the box. I have a version 1 CX-3 that
was recently upgraded by Bruce Wahler of Ashby Solutions plus I have a
new version 2 CX-3. So far, I can tell no difference. Both are eerily
close to the B-3 and 2 Leslies I have in my studio and in most cases
surpass the performance I can get from the real deal on record.
