Subject:great Hammond records
Periodically everyone posts some cds of cool organ
licks or sounds, or they post regarding how to get
"THAT" sound by someone.
Last week, someone mentioned Melvin Seals of the Jerry
Garcia Band and his work on "The Night They Drove Ole
Dixie Down". I went online and took a listen at that
song, and the next day went and bought the JGB LIVE
album. WOW!!!!!!!! There is some absolutely GORGEOUS
playing on that record by Melvin, and his tone is
exquisite. I'm not a big fan of the Dead...I like
some of it, but as can be the danger with the medium,
there seems to be a bit too much meandering. This
disc suffers from none of that, and Melvin gets PLENTY
of space to work. REALLY REALLY REALLY good stuff.
I'd also like to throw out Brother Jack McDuff's
"MOONRAPPIN" and "Down Home Style". Unbelievable.
And don't forget J Geils Band "BLOW YER FACE
OUT"....another live disc. (I know I mentioned that
one before, but I popped it in at 5am the other
morning after 9hours of driving after a gig to get to
my son's baseball tournament...I was getting quite
drowsy, so I put it in, cranked it WAY up, and I was
totally energized!!! Driving through Michigan fog
pockets in the dark of morning was never better!)
Anyways....
Tony
