Actually it's your own ears & brain that are fooling you. Here's an
illustration: the lowest note on a grand piano has a fundamental of 28hz or
something like that, but the piano's soundboard cannot resonate at that
frequency. So what you're hearing is the harmonics only. But your brain ,
in a sense, puts the fundamental back in. Same thing with your bass
player's rig.

Try an experiment: havd your bass player pluck the B or E string very
gently at the 12th fret--the idea is to get the fundamental only with little
or no harmonics. You'll notice two things: 1) the sound level's pretty
low, and 2) It doesn't sound very interesting either. What makes a modern
bass sound so good is not the fundamental tone, but the harmonics. So while
the 4 x 10 cabinet may not reproduce those low fundamentals well, the
harmonics that carry the "character" of the bass's tone come thru just fine.
After all, low B's 2nd harmonic is still around 62 HZ.
