Subject:"Average" B3 vs. V5
I have a recording session coming up where I am going to be playing
mainly organ on gospel/contemporary Christian-type of tunes. The studio
has a B3 that has seen better days, not in horrible condition, but many of
the contacts are scratchy, and it isn’t the “cleanest” sounding organ. They
also have a Trek II preamp that allows ¼” inputs to a good Leslie.
My personal set up is 2 Voce V5’s and a Hughes and Kettner Tube
Rotosphere.
My plan: To use the V5’s running through the Leslie.
I was curious of your opinions. What setup would you use? I think that
if it was a live concert I would play the B3 for both the visual as well as
the fact that when you are not recording you can get away with some level of
“garbage” coming out of the organ.
Basically it is the same argument of do you play a slightly out of tune
acoustic or a good piano sample? Would you be the purist and take the
position that nothing sounds like a B, or would you go with the “perfect”
sound?
Just musing,
Mike
