The symptoms you describe are exactly what I was hearing. It's not
the CX-3 (I've owned a CX-3 for roughly ten months, and never heard
that sound before I added a Speakeasy recently.)

My solution was simple. Someone on this list suggested that I was
overdriving my amp. I simply raised the amp volume a bit, and made
sure the SE gain switch was on low. No more pulsating distortion and
pops!
