Subject:RE: Dialing in my CX-3/SE/JBL Eon
I paid top dollar for the top of the line SE stereo preamp and let me
tell you, its worth every penny. Until someone figures out how to make a
digital instrument truly sound analog, the SE is a necessity for any
clone... I owned and gigged with a VK7, XK2, and now a CX3 and they all
need it. I even bet the new B3 sounds like digital crap without a Leslie
to round off the frequencies.

Hi,
I would encourage anyone who is having issues dialing in Speakeasy
settings
to contact Steve directly at (717) 292-0814. He loves to talk to
musicians
and although we don't have a CX-3 for testing, we have noticed that the
CX-3's seem to require the most TLC (or have the most tonal options) and
have helped many people dial in the tone they are looking for.
Regarding the Behringer preamps, as many people know there is a big
difference between a starved-plate 'put a tube in so you can call it a
tube
preamp' configuration and a 1950's style Class A configuration. Like a
real
B-3 preamp, our preamps use a Class A configuration to really drive the
tube
so that you get the warmth and coloration a tube preamp is supposed to
give
you. As a convert from an ART tube preamp to a Speakeasy (that's how I
started working for Steve), I can assure you that there is a huge
difference. And, considering the cost of the components and the fact
that
our preamps are hand-wired and contain no circuit boards, the prices are
really quite reasonable, especially compared to other high-end tube
preamps
which can easily cost a few thousand dollars.

Subject: Re: [CWSG] Dialing in my CX-3/SE/JBL Eon
I'm surprised to hear of folks using additional preamps to drive
their Speakeasy (preamps!). One poster was even using a Hammond
preamp connected in series...
I'm quite taken aback given the price of the Speakeasys. Now I'm not
disrespecting the SEs in any way because I've never had the chance to
try one. However it makes me feel even happier that I chose to buy a
Behringer tube preamp for my clone which warms up and fattens the
tone considerably whilst giving nice-sounding distortion and punch.
The cost of this unit is $49 and you don't need another preamp to
drive it plus it has a variable output from zero to 20db of gain if
you need it... :-)
