Subject:RE: System 21 rotary unit
I have the Leslie 21 System, and have had problems with it. Turns out that
I blew the drivers (at different times) in the horn rotor(had it only 3
mos.), then the base unit(after only 5 mos.). I am not a gigging musician.
Only play out occasionally, therefore the Leslie is not abused, and has and
easy life, for a Leslie.
This Leslie is full of excellent features, and has an excellent sound. You
can adjust any parameter you can imagine on the Leslie. It even has a 122
emulation mode, which mimics the sound characteristics of a 122 cabinet. I
never had a vintage Leslie, and never heard one in a really small venue, so
I don't know how good the emulation is.
I was disappointed that the Low rotor is a simulation, and not an actural
spinning drum. At the size and weight of the unit, I'm sure they could have
put a real rotor in there. The System looks impressive, and is relatively
portable. The 2 units are stand alone, but you really need both together to
get the depth and breadth of sound you would expect from a Leslie. HS
replaced the horn rotor driver with a more powerful one for free under
warranty, and shipped it back for free. They also repaired the driver
under warranty for the base unit, and shipped it back for free.
I actually ordered another rotary unit, even fter problems with the first.
It did not operate properly out of the box. The horn didn't rotate. I sent
it right back to Musician's Friend for a refund. Another member of this
group got one from Musician's Friend that was blown when he got it out of
the box. I think there was a third member who said that the drivers blow
from time to time if pushed. But other members with vintage Leslies push
them hard and long without blowing the drivers.
I wanted a stereo rig, but am very leery about buying another one of these
at this point. When I got the second one that didn't rotate, I noticed that
the first one has a hum to it, whereas the 2nd one was quiet as a mouse.
I'm wondering about reliability at this point. HS may have made other
modifications when I returned them since I know that the horn driver they
installed is moe powerful. I've had this Leslie for almost 7 months.
I'd like to hear from the other System 21 owners out there-how long you've
been using it, and have there been problems with reliability?
