can hear the horn. It's just lost in the mix a bit....

Funny, because on HDNet they have this really bad concert called "Live
from Itchicoo Park" where John Kay and "Steppenwolf" play these tunes
and the organ sounds like only the treble horn is miked... Now that's an
interesting sound.....

This was Goldie McJohn's early setup, but I believe it was gone by the
time of Magic Carpet Ride. If you listen to early songs like Born To
Be Wild or The Pusher, you can clearly hear everything going through one
large rotor. When I listen to Magic Carpet Ride, though, swear that I
hear the treble spool up quickly, and the bass join it later; i.e., a
stock -- but very overdriven -- Leslie. It is definitely so on the live
album.
