Yes I play organ and piano at the same time. Was always impressed with
Rick Wakeman's classic stack of stuff and the way that he appeared to
move between keyboards like they were a climbing jungle gym. Years
ago, in college practice rooms, I used to pull two pianos together at
180 degrees and try to play. Moderately successfully, but then I was
breaking out of reading full charts and switching over to lead sheets
and chords.
Currently I play the organ clone and piano stacked, left hand on top
for the organ and right hand lower for piano. No layers. On Phish
covers. I don't think that it's a proximity of hands challenge for
me, more a rhythm issue. Bass lines in left hand for organ and fewer
attacks, right hand for piano for more attacks and lesser sustain.
Independence of hands has not been a issue for me. But I can't even
talk during playing. I admire those that can play and talk or sing.
My brain won't rewire that way.
