Subject:Attn. Dave of Winnipeg -Paradise Setting on VK7
I got a private e mail from Dave of Winnipeg about the "paradise" setting on
Roland VK7's etc. I may have covered this before, but just in case here it
is.
I don't know
about a source of patches for VK7 on the web - I don't use that many drawbar
settings on my VK7 - however - I do use the "paradise" setting on the VK7 which
is 88800000 with percussion decay on the absolute slowest (127).
Paradise gets its name from Jimmy Smith's "Live at Smalls Paradise LP's" on Blue
Note . He also uses a similar sound on many of his 60's Verve recordings such
as "Blue and the Abstact Truth" , his recordings with Wes Montgomery and
probably others.
The Rolands do it very well - the reason it sounds interesting
is that the percussion has no vibrato, but C-3 vibrato is used to make the
paradise sound (for the other drawbars). What you hear sounds like the 5th
drawbar is being used ( it's actually 3rd harmonic percussion) but it sounds
"straight "against the other 3 drawbars that are using C-3. I have this as a mod on
my B-3 incidently. It is just a switch that shorts the percussion.
This is one of
the sounds that can make a clone sound very close to the real deal. As far as I
have been able to tell this is one of the things that I was not able to get
an Electro to do....the percussion decay as far as I could tell is that
one"fixed". The is also a good reason to have a clone with a screen so that you can
adjust percussion decay on the fly. I often use it as my slow percussion
setting.I think it sounds best with no slow rotor on the leslie ( Jimmy Smith
used no slow rotor when he had this sound) but it does sound good when used in
transition from "stop" to"fast" leslie.
