Subject:Re: Suggestions please for improvement methods
The single most overlooked "exercise" is to work on your phrasing. There's
nothing wrong with doing faster, more intricate technical exercises, but I
find the most effective "trick" is to (a) slow it down and (b) do the
unexpected, timing wise, and keep it unexpected.
I think this helps you build your own style and your set of riffs. I'm so
burnt out on players, usually guitarists, that mimic other players' riffs as
if they're an encyclopedia and just link 'em together.
Listen, of course, to everything you think is good, but try not to copy the
riff note for note - just lift the spirit of the riff and make it your own.
Heresy, I know. Fire away!
