Subject:Maceo Parker / Larry Goldings CD
Has anyone checked Maceo Parker's "Life on Planet Groove" from 1992? It is
a pretty slammin' live CD with great funk jams (albeit very long). Larry
Goldings plays some very tasty organ on this recording. It has a very
Chester Thompson-like feel to it, although I could not find any Hammond
solos. Just repetitive comping on one or two chords with basic Hammond
sounds. The Hammond sounds great, but this sounds like it was a very boring
gig for Mr. Goldings.
There's a section of one of the 15 minute jams in which Maceo is introducing
the band and he starts chanting "Go Larry, Go Larry" and the crowd joins in
the ruckus. You would think this is optimum time to rip a great solo.
Nope, he just keeps on groovin' in that same minor 7th groove. I guess it
is a study in understatement, but I would have been falling asleep behind
that organ if I was him. Poor Larry...all those chops and he gets stuck
playing one chord funk jams.
I'm not knocking the CD. I just found it interesting that Maceo did not
leverage more of Goldings' technique.
