Ok, I gotta share this story. When I was 14 and
bought my first keyboard (New Rhodes 73 Suitcase in
1974) I bought it from a guy here in Chicago, who I
will on the name of decency let remain nameless. He's
quite elderly now, but still has his store, chock full
of Hammonds in all finishes and matching leslies.
When I decided to buy my first REAL Hammond some years
ago, I went in, reminded him of who I was (he
remembered...how many 14 year olds come in with that
kind of cash...even when their mom and dad drives
them!), and walked me around his inventory. His
pricing, to me at least, was outrageous. He was
charging back in '90 a thousand dollars for a leslie.
I was incredulous and told him you could find them in
the paper all the time for 1/2 that. And his reply?
"Well, I don't deal with musicians; they NEVER have
any money." I was quite pissed, but then took out my
wallet, and told him that my money was burning a hole
in my pocket and that I was INDEED a musician. Then I
put the wallet away, and left. It's this same disdain
for musicians that Hammond displays today, in all
departments of their company. Its heinous.
