Subject:Re: OT: Piano & other sound modules

Ed...when I was with my old band, I did a lot of horn
stuff, and it had to be thick to cut through lots of
percussion (latin rock). For me, it doesnt work using
one module. I used to have my JV1080 set up in
multi-timbral mode at all times. I would use 3 or 4
channels from that, mixing trmpet/trombone/brass
section patches, then layer that with a good crescendo
horn patch from my O3r, and another brass sound from
my Wavestation. Then, depending on what was going on
around the horns, I would either add another horn
voice from my EX5r, or a brass pad from my JD990 (but
like a "Jump" type brass, not realistic) for a little
smoothing out. My theory is that a brass section is
at least 4 guys who breathe differently, so you have
four different attacks and releases, no matter how
tight they are. Using different modules together like
that not only simulated that (just the Korg with its
slower build was a clincher) but also simulated the
different tones of each horn. I used to get
compliments all the time on how realistic the horn
parts were. I think it was more that they sounded
real than anything else. The downside to this, you
need to carry a couple extra modules, but everything
is so small anymore, you can get 4 modules in a four
space rack.
