Subject:RE: Who likes VK8? (me, for one)

I use a VK77 for my main gig axe and a VK7 for quick one nighters....the VK8
is nice with the waterfall keys, but I can't use it if it isn't
programmable...if the VK88 isn't programmable I won't buy one of those
either...need to be able to tweak...

Subject: [CWSG] Who likes VK8? (me, for one)

Someone on the list mentioned that he didn't think many people on the
list
like the Roland VK 8. I do not own one but there is one thing I like about
it
very much. That is the character of the C3 chorus vibrato -which to me is
hugely important. I kind of like the "animated" quality of the C3 setting
on
this clone -it really does remind me of the Jimmy Smith recordings circa.
1966. However for now I am still sticking with the VK7 I have, which is a
little more neutral in the C3 setting.
Because of the programmability of the VK7 (and my own
tweaking of it ) I am able to get a sound out of it that I like quite a
bit. Its internal EQ allows it to get "fat" enough for me (I have a leslie
900 cab that it goes through - that helps). I do use my own tube preamp
with
it -actually a simple old Heathkit electronic tube crossover and the highs
and percussion with this Heathkit sound smooth, good and very accurate.
One
thing I prefer about the VK7 over the VK8 is that -as far as I can tell -
it is much easier to program percussion decay time and percussion volume on
the VK7 than it is on the VK8. I generally prefer a little longer
percussion decay time so I am able to get it to "blend" into the C3
vibrato
quite nicely.
To me the Roland clones do the jazz
thing (and other things) very well. However, I do not care for the leslie
simulator or any of the other auxiliary sounds in the VK7. The leslie sim
colors the basic tone too much.
The only other thing out
there
(in a clone) that has turned my head is the Electro.....I have yet to hear
version two but the old one had so much keyclick that I found it
unusable.Great leslie sim and overdrive and electric pianos though . The
basic organ (for jazz) hasn't yet persuaded me to buy one yet but it
seemed very good never the less. I would also love to hear a good B4
system......... enough for now......
