Yeah, that does alright for me, but nothing for the audience. I've also tried putting the speakers "dueling style" (back-to-back), which is interesting, but doesn't quite fit the bill. The thing about a Leslie is that it sounds great on the stage, and sounds great in the audience, too. Nothing I've tried provides both listening posts with what they need at the same time.
Open back guitar cabinets, however, seem to do this rather nicely. Even if the guitarist turns the amp towards the stage, the audience gets a healthy dose of ambience and 3D feel. I guess I could take two Fender Deluxe Reverbs, plus a subwoofer for the bass, but that seems like more trouble than taking a Leslie. I'm looking for something that's reasonably portable, but gives back the 3D image. Maybe I'll have to design my own ...
