This goes back to an earlier post I made regarding The B-3 A0-28 preamp. The
preamp stage of a B-3/C-3/A-100 Plays a big part in the Hammond sound. The
Percussion section has its own equalization, as does the final stage. The
Swell capacitor plays a big part of the Hammond sound. When I tapped a Nord
Electro into the back of A B-3 and played both instruments thru the same
preamp, and into the same Leslie, the Nord came very close to the real thing.
I suspect other clones would fair the same. The Problem is, you have three
stages in the Hammond. the Straight drawbars, the percussion, and chorus, so
its getting equalized three different ways before it hits the final output
not to mention the coloration in the preamp itself. Going into a real B-3
preamp with a clone will help big time, but it still will not be perfect,
because its getting tapped into only one stage. The other factors include the
actual sampling or modeling of the chorus/percussion. I look for that
percussion thud/clunk. That round airy 3D sound of the percussion/chorus, I
think The designers of the B-4 have a better handle on the way the stages of
a Hammond are sampled or modeled. I think most of the clones basic drawbar
sound are good, but lack in the final EQ section.
