I've seen Bill Axman's chop and I like the way it looks. I used to
play Dick Simms' chop in Tulsa years ago and I loved it. I believe
that is the organ he played on "I Shot the Sheriff". It had a
slightly different sound but it was a Hammond and it smoked. Dickie
used different settings than most regular regular players and I'm
sure the ss amp added to that sound. As I recall the footprint of
the thing was larger than a B3 simply because it gets stretched front
to back to make room for the TG that now sits almopt in front and
below the upper manual. That's the only way to make it skinny from
top to bottom.
The rail in front didn't bother me a bit and I've seen John Novello's
rig and I've seen him play it and there doesn't seem to be a problem
there either. If you really consider how close you sit to a C/B then
there is plenty of room for the rail. I'm sure Bill thought that out
before he put it there. I actually never liked the seating position
of an A100 because I had no where to put my left foot and my knees
hit the speaker board. On the BB chop I had plenty of room.
Dickie used to play pedals and he had a full set under his chop and
loads of room to work the pedals. He also had two lights that shone
down on the pedals as well as a custom made seat that straddled the
pedals. Almosr every Hammond player in Tulsa at the time kicked
pedals. If you kicked pedals you worked every night. Weird!
I'm on the fence with buying a chop. It still gets down to needing
two people to load and unload and, once in the case it takes up
almost as much room as a B3. Bottom line is you wind up getting back
to where you began. You're moving a heavy piece of gear that
requires more than one human or a horse to get it set up.
That's the trade-off.
Easy to move=clone= less than desirable sound/effect.
Hard to move=the real deal=great sound and a bad back.
GRRRR what to do, what to do. . . .
Buy a trailer and ruin your back in the process
