Expression pedals work very much like the Loudness control on your stereo
system at home--and for the same reason--to compensate for the human ear's
non-linear response characteristics. When your stereo's Loudness function
is ON, the bass & treble frequencies are boosted--how much depends on how
low the volume is set--the lower the volume, the more boost. As you turn
the volume up, there is a point (about halfway up, I think) where there is
no boost.

So when your stereo's Loudness function is on, it's volume control should be
called an expression control! :-)
