I have a similar rig, except I have V2 of the CX3 and two SRM450's. You
are almost there, but you have to back off the Speakeasy volume when you
go to Howler mode. The distortion will NOT be the classic tube
distortion you get out a Leslie because it is not spinning. However, for
the Jon Lord type, it really hits the mark.

I use a combination of the internal distortion and the Speakeasy for my
Santana sound. I have the amp gain on 5 and the Speakeasy on Howler with
the volume at around 3:00. Try that! It sounds great on my rig...

I recently purchased a Speakeasy stereo clone hybrid preamp; it has
the switches which allow selecting a Classic or Howler configuration
for each channel. My configuration is CX-3 V1.0 -> speakeasy -> 2
Roland KC-500s. I am having a problem getting the right level of
gain/distortion/overdrive. My target sound is something like Greg
Rolie (sp?) of Santana on "Evil Ways".

My starting point on the CX3 was the 'Organized' preset (A1). I set
the gain to 0, the treble to +6, the middle to +6, the bass to -2 and
the level to 127 (the highest possible). I had to back off on the
bass because the KC-500s are so bassy.

On both channels of the Speakeasy, I set the Howerler/Classic switch
to Classic, treble to 2 o'clock, the bass to 11 o'clock, and the
volume and gain as high as they would go. This got a good sound, but
very little overdrive.

So, I tried again with the HowlerClassic switches set to Howler and
no other changes. As you might expect, I got an incredible amount of
distortion. I tried to find a middle ground by setting the Speakeasy
gain and volume to very low settings while using the Howler, but I
got sort of a "tinny" distortion that was not at all what I wanted,
and sounds much worse to me that using the CX3 builtin gain.

Any suggestions would be welcome. I was hoping not to use teh CX3's
builtin gain, but I may have to. Unfortunately, I am not currently
in a position to replace with KC-500s with something else.
