having spent hours trying to get this sound out a Roland XP60 let me
chip in on this.
Townsend used a Lowrey thru a VCS3 (read this somewhere on a webite
about The Who but can't remember which one). I got close'ish using an
organ patch and editing of the LFO1/2 filters and adding some phaser
effect.
I've also heard it done on a VK7 into a digital delay which sounded
pretty close.
