Subject:Re: Bass on keys....

Great thread (LHB stuff) that comes up from time to time on both Clonewheel
and the Hammond Tech list ...

I have been playing LHB on a Roland XP50 on my travelling rig
(Electro2/122), and just using the lower manual of my B in the home studio
(augmented by an occasional kicked bass pedal as I slowly learn how to use
them).

Yesterday I set up my "over the top of the B" keyboard stand I purchased on
ebay a while back and stuck the Roland on it with the idea that I would
experiment playing LHB on the higher keyboard (which will be a total
mindf*ck for a while) and perhaps use it once in a while when I want a
punchier bass sound (my bass sound -- regardless of source --plays through
an Alembic preamp to a 2000 watt Carvin power amp into 4x10 and 18 bag end
cabinets.

So, yesterday there were a few folks over for the holiday, many of whom have
never heard a real B up close, so I played a little for the friends. At one
point I decided to fire up the Roland just for comparison purposes, and WOW
... what a punchy wonderfull sound. Needless to say I finished my
miniconcert using the Roland for LHB even though it was a little hard to
keep both hands on the appropriate manual (I can now practice this since it
is set up).

The moral of this story is that a good punchy and strong bass has no
substitute ... when I do move the B out for a gig this year (after it has
some minor work done to it), I'll be playing most of the bass on the Roland!

Seasons cheer,
