Subject:Re: Which Clone has the best Chorus/Vibrato

I always thought the VK stuff sounded best from a jazz perspective...which isn't my point of origin. But it definitely has a warm full body for that type of sound. And kudos for sticking with it and finding your thing!

Rolands are finally getting some respect on this list. That has been happening since
some people are now using the V Combo , but I have always liked the VK8 -
though I don't own one..... I still have my VK7.

Incidently my VK7 is sounding MUCH better with the addition of an
Eico stereo tube preamp that I dug out of Goodwill for 5 bucks. The C/V is not
so "dominant" as before - it seems to blend in with the tones much better.
With the VK7 you can achieve the Jimmy
Smith "paradise" setting (Long percussion decay) and I just couldn't get it with
the Nord or the VK8 . I also notice that the VK7 C/V sounds very good when a
touch of overdrive is used . One preset on my VK7 is set to "Combo" with max
bass, using bit of overdrive and the drawbars on 66600000 , third
percussion on lowest volume setting and leslie on "bypass". The Combo setting is the
only one that seems to get overdrive AND leslie sim bypass so you really have
to tweak it....because it is light on bass output until you kick the overdrive
in gear. I wish you could hear it , you might think twice about dissing the
lowly VK7.
I have taken on the challenge to make a VK7
sound good and I think I finally got it.
But yes,
I have discovered tube preamps make a world of difference. This old stereo
Eico is very nice, very neutral. The treble control is subtle and never harsh.
There probably aren't many of those around but IMHO they sound great for
clones.....it did wonders for the C/V on my VK7. No need to "upgrade" now.
