Subject:The Barker Kit
All,
I've received a number of inquiries about the kit version of the Ashby Solutions Barker. After much discussion with a number of resources, I've decided not to release the Barker as a user-installed kit.
There really isn't a foolproof way to instruct end users in how to install a high-voltage circuit into another device which also uses high voltages; i.e., the Speakeasy preamp. Some users have electronic and mechanical expertise, but many do not. If I release such a kit for general consumption, I am in effect guaranteeing that ANY user can take my kit, install it in their Speakeasy preamp, and everything will work fine. This easy to do when the power source is say, a 9V battery, but extremely difficult when a device has tube-level voltages inside. The Speakeasy preamps were design with no user-serviceable parts inside, and adding a Barker doesn't change this situation.
The Barker will still be available as an upgrade from either Speakeasy Vintage Music or Ashby Solutions, and as a new option on Speakeasy preamps. I am also considering making the kit available through local repair techs, to save owners from having to pack and ship their preamps, but have not worked out the details yet.
Thank you in advance for your understanding.
Regards,
-BW
