Subject:Nord Electro - My Impressions and Questions
I went to a local supplier of Nord Instruments in Portland Oregon yesterday
for a good long look at the Electro since I have been hearing so much about
it. My field of interest is primarily jazz so I was really checking out the
chorus vibrato, bass split and overall authentic quality of the Nord vs. the
other clones. I walked away thinking that this may be the clone for me after
all.... it just sounded so damned authentic. I know many of you will vouch
for this, but the thing I like is that it is one of the least digital
sounding digital instruments I have heard. (And this was a Version 1 ! ) It
sounded very warm....So here are my questions.
Does the Version 2 do away with the nasty key click the
version 1 has? That click is horrible. That was the reason I didn't buy one
a year ago. The Rhodes sound in this one had some kind of "warble " in the
highest four notes. Have they fixed this? Also ....will the Nord accept
expession pedals such as Roland ( the one I have) ? One other thing - the
percussion in the upper octave of the Electro organ section to be seemed a
little hot compared to a real Hammond , which tapers off and almost
dissapears depending on the instrument. Has anyone else noticed this?
I loved the bass
in the split with the Electro . I did notice that the bass foldback did seem
rather pronounced. But this clone has so much going for it as far as I can
tell. Drawbars aren't such a big deal to me as long as I can have presets.
Sound is the main thing. The overdrive was very hot... I could only barely
turn it on but this is the first time I have heard overdrive mixed with
chorus vibrato that I liked. It sounded like a vintage beast begging for
mercy ....... through phones! I have seen some low prices on these
lately so I may be ready to take the plunge .....
