Perhaps so...but a BIG reason that Johnson could do
that is that he HAD to. Transposing was not an option
so he had to force himself to play in all 12.
All you transposing Clonewheelers should consider this
scenerio: You have a big gig and guess what - the
venue is providing a B-3 on the gig! A cherry B-3 with
two 122's, perfectly miked and ready to go!! You sit
down...play it...and drool all over yourself. You
start the gig...and...uh oh...the tune in Db comes
along. Whatcha gonna do? Well, if you aren't used to
playing in Db, your gonna have a clam bake.
Don't get me wrong...I am not a 12 key wonder. I
freakin' hate B. But since we've had a guitar player
sitting in with the blues band I play with who always
wants to play in B, I am a lot better in B than I was.
Why? Because I made myself play in B and clammed it up
a few times until some of the licks fell into place.
I guess I'm a purist (well...mostly...I don't haul a
real Hammond around...yet...)
