You are correct. To clarify, I should say the gift
becomes a genetic defect when you decide to become a
full-time musician. Usually, being a full-time
musician means you play for not so great wages
(sometimes less than a teacher's salary, which as we
all know, is woefully out of wack), and in terms of
the "financial standard" we tend to exist in lower
income brackets than most of our friends. I'm not
crying, this is the choice we as musicians make. We
have to be creative in many areas to make sure we make
a sane income, which means maybe teaching (another art
itself), or renting gear (this has turned out to be OK
for me), or becoming a soundman (which explains why so
many sound "engineers" have lousy attitudes). And to
further clarify, I am GRATEFUL for my genetic defect,
to the point where it didn't and wouldn't matter: I
would play for free. I guess the genetic defect is
the need to perform and interact with other musicians,
otherwise feeling something is REALLY missing. But
you are correct....it's a gift, albeit one that
sometimes our friends, families, loved ones don't
quite understand. But music and the ability to
play...that is a gift with no boundaries.
