Price is only part of the equation and although on certain components, "yes", I would partially agree with your opinion (you pay for what you get).
The bottom line is the end product: what you and your audience hears. I wouldn't be singing the praise of Carvin amps just because they're merely durable. My clone sounds great thru my Carvin. For most of us, money will always be a factor in the equation of whether to buy kind of gear (clone or otherwise).
The Speakeasy product line comes to mind: Great product, workmanship, and not the most expensive piece of gear on the planet.
Ok, I'm done beating this OT topic to death.
