I play with a band called Hello Dave that plays what I
would call Midwestern rock and roll: kind of like a
cross between the Allman Bros and Jimmy Buffet. Very
song-based, very vocal (everyone sings in the band,
with a lead vocalist and the rest doing 3 and 4 part
harmony)and pretty high energy. Earlier this year the
band was picked up by the Dept of Defense to tour
armed forces bases all over the world. It's a great
cause, pays well, and not only gets the word out about
the band, but gets us to see places we might not get
to see otherwise. This year, the band so far has been
to Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand (that was for 7
weeks); we went to Alaska for 12 days (Anchorage,
Fairbanks, Chene), and now we'll be doing this Hawaii
thing. When we're not doing that, we're in the van
working it from as far west as Colorado, as far north
as Traverse City, Mi, and as far south as Key West.
I met these guys at Xmas when the band I was with did
a little tour opening for them. After our set, they
invited me to jam on a few tunes, which I did. The
second night, they asked if I wouldn't mind playing
the whole gig, which was a blast. I kind of never
left after that. So, with that band, its only
Hammond, Piano, Rhodes & Wurli, Clav...and the
occasional banjo. Check it out sometime!
