Subject:RE: Keyboard fast/slow switch for Motion Sound?
Hi Pete. Ok, my set-up depends on the size gig we're
doing. We do a lot of roadwork, but for the most
part, still clubs and small theatres. For our big
local shows (where we know we'll pull in 800/900
people) I bring out my HammondStore portabalized A100
(this thing is much to beautiful to call a chopper)and
a matching 122 leslie (in black) and The Bulldog (a
Model 25 leslie that was retrofitted with 122
components with one minor happy accident...in a fit of
laziness, I elected to try mounting the 15" over the
12" hole without routing the hole larger...now this
thing screams!). For most other gigs, it was the XK2
(which I just replaced with the new CX3 v2.0) into the
BullDog. But now, for this tour we've got coming up
(6 weeks in Hawaii, the Phillipines and Guam) I have
severe airline limitations, so the new rig is the CX3
with the Motion Sound Pro3T/LoPro setup with the
Speakeasy Vintage Pre with 122 option (just in case!)
the 3 speed foot control and detachable 2speed hand
control (I can still get stop using the foot). I
haven't heard the Speakeasy yet, but I owned one of
his preamps with my old CX3 and I loved the sound of
it. I also have a VoceV5 and a Hamptone preamp pedal
for my 122 (and man, do I love that thing!). So if
things get really small, I can always use my Motif 8
(that always comes out....great piano, Rhodes Wurli
and Clavs in one gorgeous feeling, yet bulky,
keyboard) and I built a little wedge shelf for the V5
that I velcro onto my Motif to get the angle of the
drawbars correct. I also (in other gigging situations
besides my regular band) use a Wavestation SR, Yamaha
EX5r (best analog synth -albeit modeled- since my old
Minimoog) and Roland JD990 and Jd800. I have an A70
controller if I have a synth/organ gig with no space,
but the Motif has really good functionality in the
controller arena. I just kept the A70 in case I have
a need for that semi-weighted vibe. And again,
depending on the size of the gig, for the balls out
stuff, I run all that into a Roland M120 line mixer
into an EV P1250 (the German version, NOT the US
version) power amp, into 2 custom made Paradise Audio
15" 2 way cabs with Ev Speakers and horns. But for
most gigs, the Motif8 just runs into a Yorkville 300K
stereo keyboard combo (2x10", and 2 1" horns, with
independent power sections for each side...the only
true stereo combo I know of....and it sounds excellent
and is small and manageable.) That sits on my leslie.
Or on an amp stand if things are really tight. By the
way...a few extra goodies: Fultone Bassdrive II for
extra gain or distortion when needed (a gorgeous
distortion box that makes every guitarist I turn on to
it go buy one), a Guyatone Vibrato pedal (little
cheezy white stomp box smaller than your mouse) that
is THE BEST vibrato EVER. Goes slower than any amp
version I've heard (including my old Suitcase Rhodes),
has 2 controls: speed and depth, and adds a slight
warmth to things. And for $65 bucks, you CAN NOT GO
WRONG! And for wah-wah on the clav....the Boss
Virtual Wah is amazing. It models all the classic wah
pedals, and lets you model your own as well (which I
did, allowing my clav sounds to quack without losing
ANY of that fat bottom). Ok....looking at all this, I
know it sounds like overkill...but I've been doing
this professionally for a long time, and I have a
latent attachment disorder (can't let go of things!),
but believe it or not, I have truly cut down and sold
quite a bit of gear. This is probably more info than
you wanted...but there you go.
Happy Daze!
