Subject:Re: Using Multiple Leslies
At a pretty high profile gig this year, I took my Hammond Store
Portabalized A100 and my 122 and my custom model 25 (retrofitted with
122 components) and used them both, and it sounded AWESOME. The band
was floored, the sound guy was way impressed, and I was so excited I
could only stand "so close" to my organ. And to think I still had
one more at home! (My custom 25's -of which I have two- are mint
condition furniture, with shelves put in for the upper rotors, with
the motors installed upside down inside the closed cavity. #2, which
was the first one built, has the hole for the 12" speaker routed out
correctly for the 15", which JUST fits in there. Now #2, which I
call "The Bulldog"...I got lazy on that one, and did not recut the
hole for the 15"; the 15" speaker sits over a 12" hole. The funny
thing is, this mother BARKS! I've switched the amps from both 25s
(which of course are 122's) and the difference in tone does not lie
there. The lazy factor ended up giving me a leslie with some scream
to it. Now, because of the dimensions of the 25, the upper rotor
obviously does not sit in the center like on a 122. It's closer to
the right side, so you can't mic it from the front or back as you'll
get some wind noise. The good news is, it forces sound guys to mic
it from the louvres (which we cut ourselves)and that works out
great. I take 2 LP Claws (drum mic clips) and have optimized their
placement so I get a consistent mic'ing job everywhere I go. Not
only am I happy that way, but so are they as it saves them putting up
stands, and saves stage space. At some groovy gig, I'm looking
forward to bringing all 3 leslies just to hear it! But trust me: the
sound of open fourths through a couple grinding leslies can only be
compared to two things: a kid playing out of his first Marshall stack
with the parents gone, and a guy riding his first Harley! Makes me
wonder why I'm trying to miniaturize my gigging rig....oh yeah,
that's right: carrying it up 2 flights of stairs made the band force
me to vow I'd do it. :)
