It's not as simple as 12AX7 vs. 12AU7. You can design a circuit with EITHER tube that will be clean, and another one with either tube that will be overdriven. Granted, clean is easier with one, and distorted with the other, but to say that the Speakeasy sounds one way and the Rotosphere/Pro-3T/etc. sounds another because of the choice of tubes is misleading, IMHO. There's a lot more to it than that.
