Hey Joe...
You are correct, that in most cases, Ebay is a
seller's market. And believe it or not, most people I
have dealt with on Ebay are actually pretty
knowledgeable about the money they're spending: they
just prefer to save the $200. Me? I agree with you:
If I'm not getting a deal on a used piece of
equipment, I'd rather buy a new one with a warranty
and service. But that doesn't mean I'm in the habit
of donating my equipment to the lowest bidder: I have
to generate money to buy equipment, and like many of
you, I do have a family. My guitarist friend does
extensive selling on ebay, mainly on Les Pauls, and
according to him, the market for those guitars is made
up of lawyers and doctors who think nothing of
dropping a little too much money on a guitar, because
in most cases, they're not buying for playability or
tone, they're buying for the quality of the wood and
finish; and shopping on ebay is much less time
consuming and less frustrating for them, and they can
afford money more than time.
And to me, the real issue is this: caveat emptor. You
and I know what we want, and we research it to death
(with things like the CloneWheel group). That option
is there for everybody.
