Subject:Re: cx-3/speakeasy/kbr3d settings ???

Steve from speakeasy actually called me last night just a few minutes
after my post. He was considering a mod that might help the ranks of
wimpy output cx-3 users, so I opened the box and installed a jumper.
What a beautiful beast! The mod helped a little, but not enough. Steve
mentioned the Howler, which grinds at lower input, and that the mod is
fairly simple.

But, I ran the cx-3 through a spare mixer channel (to direct out)
which brings the output up good line levels (as much as a V5? is that
the secret to the v5 sound?) and man, the box started to sing. I don't
actually want a steppenwolf sound, I want a full kinda blues sound,
but, I want to be able to push the tube right up to and over the edge
of breakup with plenty of headroom. I want to run the cx-3 about 12:00
at this point, so that I can boost and grind if I want to. The
speakeasy gets downright nasty if you feed it enough juice. Then back
it off till it's just right, an adjust volume and treble to taste.
This is the sound I'm looking for (I think). The sovtek tube in the
new MS will add lots more dirt if I want it.

Someone called this a "set and forget" box. I think I'm keeping it
right by my left hand, where I can fiddle with volume and treble
(large! range of effect, much more dramatic than the MS contour
control) in real time.

Gigging tonight. It'll be me vs. Mesa Boogie ... Bill
