I saw John Cleary last week at House of Blues in Cambridge. GREAT show! Love
his playing. Super tight funky band....

Let's not forget Herbie Hancock's 1973-76 period (unless someone already
mentioned this and I missed the post)
He had a killer succession of albums from Headhunters, Thrust, Manchild,
Flood, and Secrets. Secrets has a few smokin clav solos and there's clav all
over all those albums. I think on Headhunters and Thrust there was no
guitar; Herbie did all the waka-waka stuff on clav. He has an incredibly
deep sense of pocket and plays all sorts of cool rhythms and grooves. Ck out
'Heartbeat' off of the Manchild Album and 'Sly' off the Headhunters album.

BTW, if anyone is interested, the Pop Piano Book by Mark Harrison has an
excellent chapter on funk and clav styles; it gets into lots of those rhythms
and harmony and a lot of different 2 handed rhythms used on clav, as well as
lots of other styles.
