Hey Mike...the tube pre will make a HUGE difference in
the organ tone, trust me. The new CX3s as well as the
new BX3's leslie sim is a whole world better than that
what's on your vintage BX...But to be honest, I prefer
the tone of the older CXs. As for the Sharma leslie
sim...I dont think close mic'ing it will improve it by
much. The rotary effect isn't as effective because of
the high frequency driver mounted at the top: it's
obscuring the doppler and other effects achieved with
the spinning horn. I had an old 910 that had some 6x9
speakers mounted in the upper assembly, and while it
didn't totally ruin the rotary effect, it still
impacted it.
I'd find a tube pre, and stick with the CLS until you
decide to step up to a real leslie. I wish I could
find a CLS 222 myself...
