Hi Emili,
Do you know if it's Win98 or Win98SE? There are a lot of differences in the USB implementation between the two, and my suspicion is that the USB aspects are what caused the retry in the first place.
In most aspects, you have a very similar setup to me -- AMD processor, Via motherboard, MIDIman interface -- yet mine worked fine.
